Acid rain A menace A threat A danger to our ecosystem The danger of acid rain is becoming the reality for us. But for all this time, we have been neglecting the impact of acid rain Acid rain is the rain that concentrate with different types of acid to form unusual acidic rain. It is formed by Industrial activity, Transportation , Human daily activity So why should we care about acid rain? Acid rain endangered our environment, ecosystem and habitat. In addition, it directly destroying our infrastructures and buildings. But first, let take a look at the formation of acid rain. Rain normally have the pH of 5.6 because it concentrate with carbon dioxide. So rain that has the pH level below 5.6 is considered acid rain. The burning of fuel from factory, transportation and human activity create different kind of acidic pollution such as H2S04 or HNO3. The chemicals get into the water cycle. When water evaporate, it creates cloud with contained pollution. Then rain precipitated. However, this rain contains H2SO4 and HNO3, so the pH level of rain decreases … and this is called acid rain. And of course, these rain will kill many organisms living on this planet. Our globe has been damaged badly. And the culprit … is acid rain Acid rain is an extremely destructive form of pollution. It affects all type of organisms, habitat, and most importantly, us…human. The effect of acid rain on water is frightening Acid rain causes the pH levels in the air to decrease. The high acid levels contained in lakes causes a decrease in the number of fish dwelling in these lakes According to a research from UCSD, acid also produces chemical changes in the blood of the fish, and their basic body metabolism is altered which caused deformities in these inhabitants. When acid rain exposes to the soil, the acidic levels of the soil change, which cause its nutrients such as aluminum to break apart. This phenomenon creates soil erosion. In the air, nitrogen oxides react with ozone and hydrocarbons to form photochemical smog a mixture of pollutant that carries serious risk for respiratory disease to human and crop damage for agricultural activity. When small organisms like algae and krill die due to high acidity levels in the water, bigger organisms that feed off them will die from starvation; hence disrupting the food chain Acid rain forms a toxic compound by reacting with natural compounds These toxic compounds can contaminate our food, water and affect the food chain. Contaminated water and food can damage human nerves, resulting in severe brain damage and a high chance of death. If this acid rain problem is not dealt with urgently, the natural world may be in hazard of demise. Yet, despite all of the damages from acid rain, human won’t stop all of the activities that caused acid rain. Burning fossil fuel and coal for industrialization emitting gas through transportation or simply, not turning off the light will directly and indirectly increase the rate of acid rain. You might think your action is not influence anything. No, you and your community can create huge impact toward reducing acid rain. Just by using renewable energy instead of coal and fossil fuel is a huge contribution. Just by turning your car off during red light means helping the environment. Just by turning off the light, you can create a small, yet significant impact toward a safer future for our next generation.
