Welcome to The Daily Show. -Thank you so much.
-And welcome to New York City. You came here
on a zero-emissions boat, and part of me thinks that’s
because you love the climate; the other part of me wonders if that’s just
your Viking heritage. -(laughter)
-Maybe it is. -It might be?
-Yeah. Tell me why you did that. Why didn’t you fly
to New York City to come and, you know, speak
at the U.N. and-and, you know, inspire people to move forward
in the climate change movement? I did it because I have,
since a few years, stopped flying
because of the enormous impact aviation has on the climate,
uh, individually. And, um, just to make a stand. And, uh, I am one of
the very few people in the world who can actually do such a trip, so I thought, why not? Wow. (applause, cheering) Wow. I, uh… I mean, I know
I wouldn’t do that as a kid, -and I wouldn’t do it now. Um…
-(laughter) But what-what is inspiring
is your determination, and what’s inspiring
is that it doesn’t just affect other young people. It started to effect
older generations in Sweden, in Germany. People are starting to call it
“The Greta Effect,” where people are taking
more trains– since you started
this movement– they’ve said they feel ashamed to fly unnecessarily
in Europe. Your mom is an opera singer
and she stopped flying, which means she couldn’t perform
the way she used to. Do you sometimes feel bad
that she can’t perform, or are you more excited
that she’s not part of, I guess, polluting the planet? I don’t care, honestly,
about how she performs. -She…
-(laughter) She… (laughter and applause) She’s… She’s doing
musicals now, so, I mean,
she had to change career, but it wasn’t that big. (laughter) And the planet is the most
important thing for you. Yeah. I mean, for all of us,
I think it should be. Why… (applause) Why do you think… Why do you think young people are so focused
on climate change now? There’s a definite, uh,
disconnect between older generations
and younger generations when talking about the climate. Why do think that is? I mean, I think it is
because we, in a way, feel like it is more
a direct threat. Others feel like, “I won’t be alive then,
anyway, so screw it.” But we…
But we, we actually know that these consequences will face us during
our lifetime, and it is already
happening now. And it will get worse. And, uh, so I think
that is why so many young people,
especially, care about this. And, uh, and, of course, the awareness is not
as it needs to be, it’s not as much
as it needs to be. People are still very unaware,
it’s my experience. And, uh, so we need to continue, but you can see
that among young people the concern is bigger. What do you think people need
to learn about climate change? Many people have heard
of the climate warming up. Some people have a small
understanding of what it means, but what do you think is lacking in the understanding
of this issue? I think pretty much everything
because, I mean, we know that something is wrong,
that the planet is warming because of increased
greenhouse gas emissions, and that might lead to– that the ice caps will melt, and the global temperature
will rise, and there will be more extreme
weather events and so on. But they-they don’t understand how severe
this crisis actually is, and it is because
they have not been informed. Um, I mean, we are right now
in the beginning of the sixth max–
mass extinction, and, uh, people don’t know
these things. Up to 200 species go extinct every single day, and, uh, people don’t even know that we have… For a 67% chance of limiting the global temperature rise
to 1.5 degrees, we had, on January 1, 2018, 420 gigatons of carbon dioxide
left to emit to stay within that target, and now we’re already down
to less than 360. If we continue at the same
emission level as now, we have less
than eight and a half years until that budget is gone according to the IPCC
from the SR15 report. And that is for a 67% chance. Wow. And, um… Wow. 67% chance, and we’re not even hitting
those targets. What do you think
people could do, and what do you think
governments should be doing? I think people should do…
should do everything, but I think right now, if I were to choose one thing
everyone would do, it would be to…
to inform yourself and to try to understand
the situation and try to-to push
for a political movement that doesn’t exist because the politics needed
to… to fix this -doesn’t exist today.
-Mm-hmm. Um, so, I think what
we should do as individuals is to use the power
of democracy that… to make our voices heard and to make sure that…
that the people in power actually cannot continue
to ignore this. That’s powerful. -(cheering and applause)
-Wow. Do you… Do you feel a difference
in the conversation traveling from Sweden to, um, America? Is-is there a different feeling
around climate change? Uh, I would say yes. Um, because, here, it’s… it feels like it is being
discussed as something you– whether you believe in
or not believe in. -(chuckling, applause)
-And, uh… where I come from, where I come from,
it’s more like… it’s a fact. -And…
-(cheering and applause) So then I-I have
to ask you this. You sail from Europe
to New York City. Um… New York City is, um, quite an assault on the senses, um, when you come
from anywhere else. What is the biggest thing
that has stuck out to you in New York City? Uh, I mean, just everything. All the impressions. Everything is so much,
so big, so loud. -And, uh…
-(laughter) people talk so loud here
as well. And, uh, because– when you are on that boat, when I was on that boat, there is nothing. There’s just the ocean and, uh, of course,
the sound of the waves crashing. -But that’s it.
-Mm-hmm. No-no smells. (laughter) -A-Apart from sweat, but…
-(chuckles) Right. So, I remember
the first thing I noticed when I… when I–
when we came into the harbor was I woke up and, suddenly, it smelled something. And, of course,
it-it was pollution. But it’s still something. And that… and that was… It was i… -undescribable, to…
-(laughter) to-to go
from this extreme environment. -You’re disconnected from
everything and everyone. -Right. You only have yourself
and the ocean and the boat, of course, um, to New York. That is a-an accurate
and brilliant description of New York. It is undescribable
and it smells. (laughter, applause) -Yeah.
-I think that is fantastic. -(cheering and applause)
-I’m excited for your journey. I can’t wait to see
what else you’re gonna do. -Thank you for making time
for us. -Thank you. The next global climate strike
will be on Friday, September 20. To find or register
your local strike, go to FridaysForFuture.org. Greta Thunberg, everybody.
Stupid people deny climate change! How many stupid, powerful people are there worldwide? Does a young person like Greta Thunberg have to come to remind the old powerful people that they are destroying the future of their children?
She is a child, not a scientist.
Crazy that we've known about this for the last century and virtually nothing has been done. The situation only got worse.
So start a campaign against disposable diapers.
I don't mean to be rude but can the audience stop clapping and laughing every minut and listen to what she has to say, i mean she is talking about some serious shit right here.
She is just an arrogant teen fishing for attention
You do not want to understand that you should not destroy the earth to give our children a future?
Fuck Trump and hail Greta our supreme leader!!!
Madness.
#sotamera
What a nerd….
Go Greta
men vad i helvete är det här nu då
So Americans, take this message home and not just laugh about it. Please!
Lets not mention her having like 5 other People sent to The us by plane to send The boat back.
I'd like to hear her quote JFK: "not because it's easy, but because it's hard!"
Hejja Greta! 🇸🇪🇸🇪
It’s crazy how’s she’s 16, she looks like she’s 12
Fyfan, Greta gör moves
I really hate her and i know she is the most bullshit thing i everheard of. i dont no why but she is really good at english.
Dumb ass there has been a changing everyday since the earth has rotating man hasn’t changed the climate go back to Europe
Make America GRETA.
autist trash, i hope she die
What people should do? My opinion: vote to elect responsible leaders, and yes, like this girl says, inform ourselves. Stop believing in con men selling miracle oils. Be aware of politicians who make promises of delivering things that we know are not possible. That’s how we got #45 to occupy the White House.
I think her head is full of global warming….
The crowd interrupts too often, and so loud, why?
You have to be either very ignorant or a complete shameless sellout, to be able to talk about climate change, deforestation, mass extinction, water pollution and world hunger without ever mentioning the single most important and mayor contributor, the meat industry… Greta is a sellout and a disappointment. The boat trip is a lame useless gimmick
You people are utter imbeciles. I hope climate change speeds up and ends the world.
Older people look to the past and project it forward.
Young people look to the future.
She looks like an evil robot, programmed to brainwash the masses
Greta Thunberg, Inspiring others to fall for the propaganda.
This 16 year old girl, speaking to us in a second language is more articulate than the president of the United States!
She is in the league of environment activists like Dr. Vandana Shiva. How beautifully she speaks English. Europeans learn more languages than Americans
Geez……what a wet blanket.
Look up the meaning of the boat's name she was travelling with. "Malizia"
She isnt a expert… the temperature on the earth hasnt change for like 20 years even though the CO2 has rised. How does she explain that?
shes being used as spokesperson for a lunatic doomsday cult being funded by big business
why the fuck is she so small
American are really strange people…. USA and China are the most bad guy for the planet. How many plane in USA? Everyday… why you don’t use electric train? In the 80s , American cars use a loooooot of full. Usa have never do anything for the climat. Never. And see this « journalist » with a big smile talking to this young girl who stop school and talk about the climat….this is so sad …. USA really to destroy a young girl to fix the problème of the climat? Other things, if USA,Europe,Australia,do something for the climat… the other country , Russia,China, etc… they are going to do something too? Big NO. ALL The world need to change. But this impossible. Plane. Big boat everywhere. Cars everywhere. To save the planet : no more plane. No more boat,no more cars. Is it possible? NO. but this not important if we destroy the planet. The planet was here before us,the planet still be here….after us…..

Hope she gets nominated for a Nobel prize.
NY! I will be there for the climate strike! Thank you Greta! What an inspiration!
All these comments thinking that is great is so wrong. She is the part of the globalist agenda and climate change is nothing but a hoax.
Keep Going !
Shes a fraud. Family playing games. Stupid bitch
Waaaaaaaaaaaahahahaha! Greta the Scandinavian Troll at her best propagating lefti globalist talking points!
Woho heja Greta!!! Such a Young and brave girl! She is very inspiring😍
I remember students from Norway complaining about how the air smelled in the Netherlands. I didnt know what they meant because I came from countries that were a lot more polluted. When I visited Norway I was mindblown by the nature and the air was light and sweet? Nothing like I had noticed elsewhere. She is right… Americans can be very loud. When I first visited America it felt almost agressive, then I realised thats just how they talk.
Global Warming or
Mini Ice Age?
Hopefully, if we read this, many of us in the northern hemisphere are able to stay warm! All over is now seeing the beginning weather change of what is going to occur over and over. This "absurdly cold weather not seen before"
"Cold is coming." The main controversy is that this information is totally odds from the current popular on-going push about global warming. The planet will survive with or without us.
we are in a water cycle that is profoundly set to create a mini-ice age. It may seem to us that it gets hot before it has to get cold, but if we will look into our geology records, we will find the exact same thing has happened before. "
What is happening now while Humans are here, is the same as what happened before when Humans were not here. It's a cycle of weather that we did NOT cause, and which the planet has seen numerous times. It is linked to the cosmos (the sun), and the ice-core samples clearly show this cycle.
Climatology is like Economics: Very few will agree. "We don't have time to argue. Eventually, the issue will solve itself when we simply look out the window." The entire reason for this message is that the electric grid will fail, and many may not survive.
The grid is not used to generate the heat we need with the temperatures that are coming. We are out of time. Instead, in admonishes, the power industry allows the new inventions for electricity production, which are here, available, and not being developed fast enough.
These inventions allow individual homes and neighborhoods to produce their own power off the grid. This interest is not political, but compassionate. I warn you to make these changes now to save thousands of lives.
What can we do about all this? Have a very strong visualization of seeing industry on-board with this new technology. I believe that if we are aware of "what is out there," synchronicities will occur and that our consciousness will prevail.
Look at what is happening already with how society is starting to wake up to inappropriate things that have always been there. Now it's time for the same thing to happen with old energy technology. We can do it!

Ugh. Trevor Noah tries to date her.
6 to 7 percent chance or 67%
New york is an assault on the senses when you come from anywhere else. Really, trevor noah. The slums of joburg smell better. China, india, and bangladesh are preferable to the senses than america.
What an honest, earnest young lady. Bravo!
Somebody give her a Nobel Peace Prize and a bigger platform
powerful girl and i’m really impressed from her and i really like the way that she spoke
Climate change is a scam
Fucking leftist
Changing career isn't that big
Changing climate is a big thing
😂😂😂
Didn't know to laugh or cry! She is amazing and such an activist….
Shame on politicians who are oil industry's puppets.
Thank you Trevor. You are a good man.
This young girl is so great!
Bernie has the policies that address this issue properly. Let’s all vote for Bernie… and support him in his efforts, that’s what we all can do here in the USA.
What an absolute bullshit. The climate has always changed, the world isn’t a thermostat! People are so limited informed when it comes to climate change. Of course we should take care of the plastics in our oceans, and to recycle as much as possible. But we cant control the climate!
I always find it creepy how adults turn young girls like this into almost saintly and wise figures. Using children for that sweet sweet confirmation bias, gross. Even if I assume everything she says is 100% true, the swooning from people around her is chilling.
👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎😨😨😨
Greta is trying to understand at many times why the silly audience laughs and shouts and applauses every sentence instead of being more serious about that serious topic. (Same for Trevor Noah).
Shame.
Thanks Greta for shaking the world!
Brainwashed simply brainwashed
Trevor, you know we Africans will only give a shit about climate change if they could make money out of it😂
Is it more important that the climate has 76% chance to be safe in 8 years or that we have a young girl that is going to be safe whatever she says who is speaking in a way that can be used against others politically?
I hate media when they treat people as tools like this.
Help spread the message ;- >> https://amzn.to/2LF0z1u <<
Not ‘since a few years’ .. for a few years.
Nevermind that people had to fly to New York to sail the boat back…
brilliant. she is so intelligent
Fridays for future is todayyy I will be protesting in Munich
well kids we are too late to turn back…just enjoy the ride our world is doom 🙂
I totally changed my life six years ago. I have no car, I do not fly, I do not eat meat, I do not consume anything unnecessary, etc. It's actually a win-win situation for both me and the enviroment. I'm 53 so obviously you can teach an old dog new tricks.
Looks like common sense is not that common anymore. All her points are not that complicated, yet everyone is just maybe complacent?
#FuckGreta
Greta, you are more than superb and brilliant in answering the serious questions with such humor and irony.
trash video
She’s full of crap and people are cheering her. This is so sick.
Mashallah Greta, du är så grym👌🏽👌🏽👌🏽✌🏽
What an inspiring girl!
Trevor it's 6-7% chance to limit the global temp not 67% 🙁 Very grim
Yeah it's all fun and games untill granny's stealing your oxygen
Shes at the right spot, cause shes one big joke 😀 Appaarently people outside the nordic countries cant se it. She is a meme here in the north 😀 An autism tool of the globalists and her greedy parents 😀 Way to go folks^^
She has so much politeness that even though words were coming to her mind to describe NY City’s pollution, but she filtered them and said “indescribable “
What a character with a Great cause. Bravo 👏 👍
New York City is a giant center of pollution. It smells. She is trying to explain how New York is the embodiment of pollution.
“Hahahahahahaha” the audience.
The cringe level is real….
Omg, the audience is so noisy
https://www.ipcc.ch/ please visit the official website. the IPCC reports are organized by over 150 scientist and each involves over 6,000 publications. This is what Greta is trying to make us read and understand, this is the source of everything she is saying, especially the special report of October 2018, Global Warming of 1,5° C. Please inform yourself and try to read it https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/ . The media have been presenting the issue as some nerd-activist thing. It is a reality, it is affecting people’s lives right now, it is not something you can believe but something you MUST know.
greta gris
This girl is MAGNIFICENCE in a small body! I adore her and I want her to live in a place that does not smell like filth and pollution
This girl is inspiring
Do they have a laughing track? My god enough with the laughter
This is only interesting for moronic impressionable people. Unfortunately there are many nowadays.
lal
Hahahahaha, wtf is this?
