Hello and welcome to this mini course on how
you can help protect the environment. In this lesson, you will learn how you can improve
the planet by first changing your habits. Being aware that with your daily actions you
can do your part to save the world is the first step toward a healthier future for you
and for your children. Here are 10 simple habits to help our world: 1. Unplug anything you don’t need.
At home, unplug any appliances or devices when not in use. In this way, you will consume
less energy which will contribute to reduce the amount of toxic fumes released by power
plants. 2. Take public transportation whenever possible.
If you live in a city with a good public transportation system, choose public transport instead of
driving your car. This action will reduce traffic congestion and will decrease the greenhouse
gas emissions in the atmosphere. 3. Turn off the ignition when parked or stopped
at a level crossing. Turning off the ignition in similar situations
is another great example of how you can limit the greenhouse gas emissions. 4. Think before buying a new electrical appliance.
If you consider to fix a broken appliance or to buy secondhand, this will avoid using
all the resources required to manufacture new appliances. 5. Ride your bike whenever you have the chance.
Riding your bike is a great way to stay healthy and to help the environment. 6. Wash dishes by hand instead of running
the dishwasher. Reducing the number of times you use the dishwasher
will reduce both energy and water consumption. 7. Reduce the use of plastic bags.
Our oceans and streets are polluted because of plastic. When you go shopping make sure
you have some reusable shopping bags with you and try to buy products with less packaging
or with biodegradable materials. This a very smart habit to take! 8. Don’t throw away food.
Do you know that food waste that ends up in landfills produces a large quantity of methane
which is a more powerful greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide?
A good idea is to plan the meals for the entire week and write down a list of what you need
at the grocery store. In this way, you shouldn’t have much food left over! 9. Don’t waste water.
Water is precious and limited. Try to take shorter showers, to close the tap while you
are brushing your teeth and to use water responsibly in your everyday life. 10. Learn how to grow vegetables in your garden.
Learning to grow your own vegetables is an important choice that will change your life
forever. You will grow your food without pesticides and save the environment from air and water
pollution. You will also eat and enjoy the fresh taste of organic vegetables. And last
but not least, growing your food will make you save money. The change starts with you. Changing your
habits is never easy, but a healthier daily routine will improve your life but first of
all, it will save our planet. Thank you for joining this course. I hope
